2026-10-01 11:30:00

Overview

The Beijing Off-road BJ60 is a mid-to-large ladder-frame SUV launched by the Beijing Off-road brand under BAIC Group (Beijing Automotive Group Co., Ltd.). Positioned around the differentiated concept of "family-fun off-roading", it is engineered to blend genuine rugged 4x4 capability with family touring comfort. Built on Beijing Off-road's "Emotional Hardcore 3.0" design language, the entire range comes standard with a body-on-frame chassis, serving as a key flagship offering in the RM200,000 to RM300,000 rugged SUV segment. The BJ60 lineup was officially launched in November 2022, initially powered by a 2.0T petrol engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. The range subsequently expanded to include a 2.0T turbodiesel variant (Thousand Miles Edition) and 1.5T range-extender (EREV) models (Magic Core Electric Drive Edition, Thunder Edition, etc.), with both 5-seater and 7-seater configurations available. By 2026, the 2026 BJ60 Range-Extender Executive Edition was launched in late November 2025 at an official retail price of RM295,800, dropping to RM275,800 after combining national subsidies and brand trade-in incentives.

Design Language

The exterior styling of the BJ60 embraces Beijing Off-road's "Emotional Hardcore 3.0" design philosophy, preserving its boxy, rugged 4x4 silhouette while integrating refined, high-tech styling cues. Up front, it features the brand's signature "Five-Arch Star Ring" front grille, with U-shaped five-slot elements and integrated LED light strips merging into the U-shaped four-point LED headlamp clusters. The 2026 Range-Extender Executive Edition places greater emphasis on sophistication, featuring chrome-finished front fender faux air vents, exterior door handles, and side skirt garnishes, paired with new 20-inch multi-spoke chrome alloy wheels. Around the back, it gets a tailgate-mounted full-size spare tyre, vertical LED tail lamp clusters, and a side-hinged tailgate, along with a silver skid plate and a factory-prepped tow hitch receiver integrated into the rear bumper.

In terms of dimensions, the BJ60 measures 5,040 mm in length, 1,955 mm in width, and 1,925 mm in height, with a 2,820 mm wheelbase. It boasts a 30° approach angle, a 24° departure angle, a 23° ramp breakover angle, 215 mm of minimum ground clearance, and an 800 mm maximum water-wading depth, setting strong physical off-road benchmarks in its class. Exterior colours are optional, with water-wading and geometry specs varying slightly across variants. Inside, the cabin blends rugged styling with executive comfort; the 2026 Range-Extender Executive Edition adopts a new dark grey theme, with suede-like upholstery on the seats and headliner, alongside upgraded diamond-quilted door trim stitching. A mountain-range graphic motif is embedded into the front passenger piano-black dashboard panel, illuminated in sync with the ambient lighting.

Powertrain & Performance

Petrol & 48V Mild-Hybrid Variants Powered by a Mitsubishi-sourced 2.0T turbocharged petrol engine (code 4K31TD) producing 196 kW (approx. 267 PS/264 hp) and 406 Nm of peak torque, mated to a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, returning a WLTC combined fuel consumption of 9.5 L/100 km. Expanding on the 2022–2023 lineup, the 2.0D Diesel Thousand Miles Edition delivers 120 kW (approx. 163 PS/161 hp) and 400 Nm of torque, also paired with an 8-speed automatic.

Range-Extender (EREV) Variants (Magic Core Electric Drive / Thunder / Everest Editions, etc.) Equipped with a 1.5T four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine as a dedicated range extender (138 kW / approx. 188 PS), driving an intelligent front-and-rear dual-motor electric 4WD system with a combined output of 403 kW (approx. 548 PS/540 hp) and 655 Nm of torque, completing 0-100 km/h in 5.8 seconds. Power is supplied by a 40.3 kWh ternary lithium-ion battery pack from CALB, delivering a CLTC pure electric range of 152 km and an overall cruising range of 1,200 km, with WLTC combined fuel consumption rated as low as 1.3 L/100 km. It supports DC fast charging (up to 60 kW, completing 30% to 80% SoC in 30 minutes) and 3.5 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) external power output. The entire lineup runs on minimum RON 92 petrol.

Chassis & Handling

The BJ60 is underpinned by a body-on-frame ladder chassis across the entire range, pairing a double-wishbone independent front suspension with a multi-link independent rear suspension. It stands out as one of the few rugged SUVs to combine a ladder frame with four-wheel independent suspension, enhancing on-road ride comfort without compromising chassis torsional rigidity. The part-time 4WD system allows electronic switching between 2H, 4H, and 4L modes, with 4L providing a 2.54:1 low-range torque multiplication. In terms of differential locks, top-spec petrol models feature front, centre, and rear differential locks, while range-extender models come standard with an intelligent electronic centre lock and an electronically controlled mechanical dog-clutch rear axle differential lock (the 2024 base model excludes standard centre and rear locks). The ATS all-terrain control system offers 9 to 12 drive modes depending on the variant, covering Sport, Eco, Comfort, Snow, Mud, Sand, Rock, Cross-country, and Wading. Furthermore, the BJ60 provides 12-speed crawl control, tactical U-turn assist, and a wading depth sensor, substantially boosting off-road drivability in complex conditions.

Cabin & Equipment

The 2026 BJ60 Range-Extender Executive Edition showcases a pioneering six-screen off-road smart cockpit, comprising a 10.25-inch full digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch central infotainment touchscreen, a 12.8-inch front passenger entertainment display, a 9-inch digital streaming rear-view mirror, a head-up display (HUD), and a 1.92-inch push-start button touchscreen. This six-screen setup enables multi-display linkage for navigation, driving telemetry, off-road data, and multimedia playback. Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor, the system supports 5G connectivity, Huawei AppGallery, intelligent voice interaction (powered by Tencent AI), smartphone connectivity, and full-vehicle over-the-air (OTA) updates. In terms of creature comforts, the Executive Edition adds a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel (with power adjustment, memory, and heating), power-adjustable front seats with ventilation, heating, massage, and lumbar support, front passenger 'boss buttons', and heated/ventilated/massaging rear seats. Audio is handled by a 12-speaker Infinity sound system with a dedicated amplifier and Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). Climate control is managed by a tri-zone automatic air conditioning system with rear vents and air purification functions. Other highlights include an onboard fragrance system, 256-colour ambient lighting, and a 1.05-square-metre panoramic sunroof.

Safety & Driver Assistance

On the safety front, the BJ60 comes standard with Level 2 (L2) Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The 2024 and 2026 range-extender variants are comprehensively fitted with full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), alongside active safety alerts such as Door Opening Warning (DOW), Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Lane Change Assist (LCA), and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA). Automated Parking Assist (APA), including reverse tracking assist and remote parking, is standard on higher-spec trims. The Range-Extender Executive Edition's sensor suite incorporates four millimetre-wave radars and fourteen ultrasonic sensors. However, urban or highway navigation-guided semi-autonomous driving (NOA) features are not yet offered. Passive safety is reinforced by a high-strength steel ladder frame and "Taiji" chassis design, backed by 6 airbags (dual front, side, and curtain airbags), alongside Roll Movement Intervention (RMI), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), Hill Descent Control (HDC), and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Market Performance & Verdict

At launch, the BJ60 enjoyed a strong start, securing over 10,000 pre-orders in 83 days thanks to its strategic price positioning between the Tank 300 and Tank 500 (RM239,800 to RM285,800) alongside its unique "ladder-frame + four-wheel independent suspension" setup. However, heading into 2025 and 2026, the BJ60 lineup suffered a steep sales slump, continually lagging behind the brand's overall growth pace. Monthly sales for the petrol and range-extender series plummeted from around 984 units in October 2024 to just 6 units in March 2026, recovering marginally to 121 units in April 2026—trailing far behind benchmark rivals such as the Tank 300 (3,340 units) and Bao 5 (approx. 1,511 units) during the same period. The slump has been compounded by slow product updates, with petrol models remaining largely based on 2022–2023 specifications without meaningful mid-cycle enhancements. While the BJ60 Range-Extender version offers a spacious cabin and generous luxury features, its driver-assist suite remains restricted to baseline L2 functionality, limiting its tech appeal against newer competitors. Market feedback has also highlighted issues regarding engine power calibration, low-speed 4WD responsiveness, and build quality consistency, with online complaints regarding quality control and infotainment glitches further dampening consumer confidence. Given that China's rugged SUV segment has expanded to an annual volume of hundreds of thousands of units, the BJ60's core setbacks stem from slow product iterations, a widening tech gap in electrification and smart driving, and early pricing that strained market trust. Within Beijing Off-road's internal portfolio, the BJ60 failed to capitalise on the new-energy hybrid boom, underscoring an urgent need to restructure its model lineup and pricing over the long term. Overall, as Beijing Off-road's flagship contender in the RM300,000 rugged SUV space, the BJ60's ladder-frame chassis and spacious multi-seat layout deliver solid fundamentals; however, amid intense market rivalry, comprehensive overhauls in technology, pricing, and service will be crucial to win back buyers.
